Grizzly bear makes snow angels on Seattle snow day

Whether you spent some time today stuck at home, stuck in traffic, or stuck at work or school, you could probably use a little grizzly bear snow angel magic to make you smile.




The smiles don't stop there. Now prepare yourself for young arctic fox Hudson who knew just what to do on his first major Seattle snow day...make snowballs!




This whole place transformed into a winter wonderland today. For some animals, the snow brings out their instincts, and for others, it's a curious novelty. While the animals have plenty of heated and covered spaces to cozy up in, many chose to go out and play today. Hope you did too!















Our thanks to the zookeepers and all the zoo staff who came in today to make sure the animals—and our guests—were well taken care of. Hope you all have a happy snow day, wherever you are!

HI, I am wondering how come the bear is not hibernating? Is it already out of hibernation? Do the animals that usually live in the tropics adapt to the colder air here? Are you worried they will get frost bite or sick from the different environment? The videos were so adorable. Thank you for sharing them with us.

Great pictures and videos! thrilling to see the video of the bears and Hudson the fox on TV news.....please do this more often...great for general public to see more about our wonderful WPZ.

The grizzlies don't truly hibernate, they go into a slow downed phase called torpor. While their activity level is pretty low during this time, it didn't stop them from having some fun in the snow. (Admittedly, it quickly turned into nap time soon after this moment we caught on camera.) As for the rest of the animals, they all have custom built habitats that provide for their needs regardless of the weather. They can retreat into heated and covered areas, and often their habitats and water are temperature and humidity controlled in ways guests can't necessarily see on the surface. Still, some choose to head out to explore knowing they can retreat into warmth at any time!

That's great! Thanks for putting it up. They're just like little kids, and it's obvious they're having fun! Beautiful animals, and their colors are so vivid against the bright-white snow. Nice to be able to see them halfway across the country here in Illinois.

Could you folks possibly be convinced to provide extra-high-res versions of these photos for use as desktop wallpaper? 1920x1080 would be awesome, and 2560x1440 would be extra 4K awesome.

Great pictures! I really wanted to come up and walk in the zoo that day, but did not dare drive. Is Hudson the fox viewable at the zoo? I have seen all the others, but not him.
